Course Grading Practices

  • English 11 AP

    Assessments: Benchmark Writing Assessments, Portfolios, projects, exams, quizzes = 40%

    • Analysis, Synthesis, and Argumentative essays will prepare students for the AP exam and often allow individual choice.
    • Group Assignments require students to collaborate with peers and apply acquired knowledge.
    • Major Writing Assignments and other projects are done over an extended period of time and follow the writing process (prewriting, drafting, revising, feedback, editing, reflecting).
    • The Mid Year Portfolio and Year End Portfolio involve collecting and revising your best assignments from the year and reflecting. 

     

    Coursework/Classwork = 60%

    • Weekly AP Assignments support core understandings and build skills.  
    • Guided Reading Responses involve reading shared and independent texts and completing reading responses.
    • Practice AP essays and Reading Comprehension passages will be completed both inside and outside of class.
    • Class Notes include responses to in-class assignments, discussions, presentations, shared texts and vocabulary lists.
    • Participation includes: 
        • Always being respectful towards your teachers and peers; 
        • Being prepared to independently read and write when directed; 
        • Contributing to class discussions in a positive manner.
    • Consistent attendance and frequent participation are basic expectations; obviously, excessive lateness and unexcused absences negatively impact completion of class work and participation in class.

     

    Creative Writing A/B

    Assessments (40%)

    • Major Writing Assignments (Personal Narratives; Descriptive Writing; Poetry) are done over an extended period of time and follow the writing process.
    • Projects are culminating assignments based on curriculum units.
    • Literary Analysis responses are based on analyzing texts and discussing relevant textual evidence. 
    • Group Assignments require students to collaborate with peers and apply acquired knowledge.

     

    Coursework/Classwork (60%)

    • Checkpoint assignments for Major Writing Assignments (prewriting, drafting, revising, giving/receiving feedback, self evaluating).
    • Guided Reading Responses based on shared and independent texts.
    • Class Notes include responses to in-class assignments, discussions, presentations, shared texts and vocabulary lists.
    • Participation includes:

    ***The grade for the “Final Exam” in Creative Writing A/B is based on the Final Portfolio, which is a collection of a student’s best work from the course.***
