Dear parents and guardians,
I would like to extend a warm welcome to both new and returning students and their families. I hope that everyone had a wonderful and enjoyable vacation.
As your child’s ENL teacher this year, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Mr. Jaime Farez. I was born in Ecuador and came to the United States at the age of 4. I grew up in Ossining and went to school there. I received my undergraduate and graduate degrees from Manhattanville College. This is my eleventh year in Education, I have worked in the Tuckahoe School district, Ossining School district, NYC school district in the Bronx and Highland Falls Central School district.
The Peekskill High School ENL program is designed to give support to students whose first language is not English. The goal of the program is to help these students develop and further strengthen their English skills in order to be successful in mainstream classes. I will be providing a combination of direct English Instruction, and content-based instruction designed to boost their vocabulary and comprehension skills in the various academic content areas. Ultimately, these students will be able to effectively listen, speak, read and write fluently in English.
Your child will remain in the ENL program until he/she reaches English proficiency as measured by the New York State English as a Second Language Aptitude Test (NYSESLAT) This test is given each year in May. Please understand that learning a language is a process that doesn’t happen overnight. Students will learn conversational english first. Academic English (what is needed for the classroom) takes longer to learn. Let's work together to help your child succeed.
If you ever have any questions or concerns about your child, please do not hesitate to contact me by phone or email. I look forward to meeting you at our open house on September 25 @ 6:30 pm.
