Mrs. Carmen Vargas and her team at Uriah Hill Elementary hosted a Black History Month Celebration at the school. The event featured a stunning song by special guest Ja'Quon Welch, inspirational words from Peekskill Mayor Rainey, and a special presentation from the NAACP's Michael Stephenson. Stephenson came accompanied by props such as an astronaut helmet and scientist goggles, which he handed out to students with the message that they can grow up to be whatever they'd like. Mrs. Vargas' special dance troupe and Mr. McClellan's class also performed, and Ms. Council's class recited poems for guests.

Uriah Hill students in Ms. Stratigeas’ classroom have a special class mascot helping to promote literacy and a love for reading at home – Pete the Cat! Each night a different child is allowed to take home their class “pet” along with a book. Students are encouraged to read and write about their adventures with Pete before returning him home to the classroom the next day. Thank you to our Uriah Hill families who have shared their own photos of Pete with us!
