Science Department Homework Policy and Rationale:
Research has shown that students of science benefit tremendously from the additional practice of concepts learned in class. Homework is a valuable tool that serves to reinforce difficult concepts and terminology taught in real time. The new science standards demand inquiry-based learning, where students produce their own scientific writing for laboratory procedures and reports. We believe homework will help students improve the core study skills including increased reading, writing as well critical thinking abilities to perform better under the new standards. Additionally, homework is known to promote better time management skills to help prepare students for college readiness. The goal of homework is to practice in order to master topics introduced in class and help clarify any misconceptions. It gives students the opportunity to reflect on their daily learning and devise follow-up questions for teachers. Likewise, it promotes the development of good study habits and encourages students to take ownership of their learning as they will be expected to do in college. The Science Department will support all Peekskill students and encourages them to seek assistance with their teachers for their assignments at any time during class, call-back, or Elton Brand.
