• Skills Syllabus

    This class is designed to address students’ specific needs and to work on skills necessary for success in the middle school.  This class is designed to prepare students to be successful in their classes by “filling the gaps” of skills and knowledge.

    We will work on the following skills in class:

    • Basic foundation skills in reading, writing and math
    • Content vocabulary in all subject areas
    • Working on IEP goals
    • Organizational skills
    • Time management skills
    • Effective study strategies
    • Test taking skills
    • Self advocacy skills

    EXPECTATIONS:

    • Come to class on time and be prepared to work.
    • Follow the classroom routines and complete all activities/work for the day.
    • Be polite and respectful to all students and adults.
    • Be on task and respect other students’ needs to work quietly.
    • Make the most of their time to receive additional support.
    • Ask questions and participate appropriately in class.

    Example Activities:

    • Making and reviewing vocabulary flashcards for ELA,  social studies, or science
    • Reviewing directions for a project and allowing time for students to work on it in steps/phases
    • Playing a review game to prepare for a test
    • Practicing reading, writing and math skills and strategies.
    • Re-teaching a difficult concept from one of the core subjects
    • Pre-teaching vocabulary or complex skills, strategies or concepts to prepare for a content class
    • Practicing reading strategies to become better readers

    How families can help thier child be successful in school:

    • Ask your child to share what they are learning in school.
    • Ask them what their favorite part of the day was. 
    • Ask them to explain how they solved math problems.
    • Ask them to describe character and the problems in the books they are reading.  
    • Keep up on current events together. Discuss the news, read the newspaper together, etc.
    • Make sure your child is reading for at least 20 minutes every night. 
    • Frequently visit teachers’ websites and  parent portal.
    • Visit links that are recommended by the teachers to work on skills.
    • Accept teacher’s invitations to receive summaries from your child’s Google Classroom pages.
