Math 8 & Honors Math 8

  • MATH 8

    This course covers the 8th Grade New York Next Generation Standards.  In Grade 8, instructional time will focus on four critical areas:

    1) formulating and reasoning about expressions and equations, including modeling an association in bivariate data with a linear equation, and solving linear equations and systems of linear equations;

    (2) grasping the concept of a function and using functions to describe quantitative relationships;

    (3) analyzing two- and three-dimensional space and figures using distance, angle, similarity, and congruence, and understanding and applying the Pythagorean Theorem.

    ALGEBRA I COMMON CORE

    Algebra 1 provides a formal development of the algebraic skills and concepts necessary for students to succeed in all future higher-level mathematics courses.   The fundamental purpose is to formalize and extend the mathematics that students learned in Honors Math 6 and Honors Math 7. Because it is built on the middle grades standards, this is a more advanced version of Algebra I than previously offered.  Students will transition from concrete to abstract thought, as they develop many skills such as problem solving and critical thinking.  The concept of function is emphasized throughout the course.  In addition to their regularly scheduled class period, students meet an additional period every other day to deepen their understanding of the topics learned in class.

    This course prepares students to be successful on the New York State Common Core Algebra 1 Regents Exam.

    Upon completion, students will earn 1 High School credit in math.
