    Hillcrest Community School Initiative (HCSI) offers a variety of programs and activities to

    the students and families of Hillcrest Elementary School. The HCSI program is located in Room 2

    at Hillcrest Elementary School.

    Mindfulness through Art

    Students will explore mindfulness through creative activities designed to bring about a greater understanding of their thoughts and feelings. By practicing mindfulness and art, the group will help students develop skills for establishing emotional well-being.

    Knitting Group                                                            December 2015 Mondays 4-5pm    

    Students will learn the basics of knitting. This is a hands-on activity that is creative, relaxing and entertaining. Members learn to work together in a supportive environment. All skill levels welcome.

     

    Flag Making                                                              Mondays & Wednesdays 4-5pm     

    Students will create their own flag using colors and pictures that have personal meanings. By creating a flag, students will be able to creatively communicate things that are important to them.

     

    4th Grade Young Leaders of Tomorrow –Boys Group                  Mondays 4-5pm

    4th grade boys will learn what it means to be a leader and develop leadership skills, self-esteem and positive decision making through creative and fun activities and discussions.

     

    Photography Club                                                                            Tuesdays 4-5pm

    Photography club will introduce students to the art of photography. Students will be guided by a professional photographer and learn the fundamental skills of this art form.

     

    4th Grade Daughters of Destiny- Girls Group                                 Tuesdays 4-5pm

    4th grade girls will learn to develop self-esteem, positive decision making, and healthy body image.

     

    Cub Scout                                                                                Starting in December

    The Cub Scout program is a fun and educational experience concerned with values. The program provides a positive place where boys can enjoy safe, wholesome activities. Cub Scouting focuses on building character, teaching practical skills and developing a spirit of community service.

     

    Girl Scouts                                                                             Starting in December

    Girls Scouts helps young girls to build self-confidence and character through fun and creative activities.

    Improvisation Group                                                                        Thursdays 4-5pm

    Improvisation is a form of theater in which no script is used. Instead, the actors create the dialog and action themselves, as they perform. Actors and audience work together to create theater.

     

    Book Club                                                                                          Thursdays 4-5pm

    Students will meet once a week and discuss Wonder by R.J. Palacios, a story about a young boy born with a facial difference that, up until now, has prevented him from going to a mainstream school. Starting 5th grade at Beecher Prep, he wants nothing more than to be treated as an ordinary kid—but his new classmates can’t get past Auggie’s extraordinary face. WONDER, now a #1 New York Times bestseller and included on the Texas Bluebonnet Award master list, begins from Auggie’s point of view, but soon switches to include his classmates, his sister, and others. These perspectives converge in a portrait of one community’s struggle with empathy, compassion, and acceptance.

     

    Chess Club                                                                                         Thursdays 4-5pm

    The Chess Club gives students an opportunity to learn the art of chess and play friendly games against their peers in a low-stress environment. Students of all levels are welcome.
