Peekskill School District Leader Dr. Kern Mojica Honored by WABSE

The Peekskill City School District proudly announces that Dr. Kern Mojica, Director of STEAM, has received an award from the Westchester Alliance of Black School Educators (WABSE), recognizing his exemplary leadership and commitment to educational excellence and equity.
“It is a great honor to be recognized by WABSE for the work I've been involved in throughout Westchester County,” said Dr. Mojica. “I feel deeply humbled to be part of this extraordinary journey in the Peekskill City School District. Together, we’re not just educating children; we’re transforming futures.”
Since joining the Peekskill City School District in 2023, Dr. Mojica has made a lasting mark on the district’s instructional landscape. As Director of STEAM, he has advanced the district’s vision for integrated science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics education for all students. Dr. Mojica is also credited with strengthening teaching and learning practices throughout the district, and expanding access to high-quality STEAM opportunities for children in grades Pre-K through Grade 12.
Dr. Mojica earned a Doctorate in Professional Studies with a concentration in Computer Science/Computing from Pace University. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics Education and a Master’s degree in Secondary Education with a concentration in Special Education. He also possesses advanced certifications in School Building Leadership and School District Leadership.
Prior to his role in Peekskill, Dr. Mojica spent more than 13 years in the Pleasantville School District, serving as a teacher leader, coach, creator, instructional leader, and Director of the District’s STEM program, among other roles. In November 2018, he was appointed Assistant Principal at Putnam Valley Middle School, further deepening his experience in school leadership and administration.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Dr. Mojica brings valuable real-world and athletic experience to his work with students. He played Division I football for the University of New Hampshire, an experience that continues to inform his emphasis on teamwork and discipline in education.
“Dr. Kern Mojica is a transformative leader,” said Jamal Lewis, Assistant Superintendent of Administrative Services for the Peekskill City School District and President-Elect of the Westchester Alliance of Black School Educators. “Since joining Peekskill in 2023 as Director of STEAM, he has made an immediate impact on teachers and students, while advancing our vision for integrated STEAM education. Dr. Mojica is a vital asset to our district and to the field of equity in education.”
The award was presented as part of WABSE’s annual scholarship fundraiser, which supports Black high school seniors pursuing higher education. WABSE recognizes Black male educators who embody service, advocacy, and excellence in education, and who serve as role models and champions for equity and student achievement.
Founded in 1991, the Westchester Alliance of Black School Educators is an affiliate of the National Alliance of Black School Educators. WABSE was the first official NABSE affiliate in Westchester County and was established to convene Black educators and allies to discuss, strategize, and implement solutions to the unique challenges faced by Black educators and students, while advancing excellence in education for all children.
The Peekskill City School District congratulates Dr. Mojica on this well-deserved recognition and celebrates his continued leadership.
