Peekskill High School Hosts Inspiring My Brother’s Keeper Summit

On Saturday, April 5, 2025, Peekskill High School opened its doors to young men from across the region for an uplifting and impactful My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) Summit. Organized by the Peekskill City School District, the event brought together students in grades 8–12 for a day centered on mentorship, leadership and personal growth.

The summit began with a complimentary breakfast, welcoming students into an affirming environment of encouragement and connection. The morning’s keynote address was delivered by Dr. Lester W. Young, Jr., Chancellor of the New York State Education Department, who shared powerful insights on education, resilience, and the journey to success.

A particularly meaningful moment was the symbolic tie-tying ceremony, during which mentors helped students put on ties—a gesture symbolizing professionalism, confidence, and preparation for the future. This hands-on act resonated deeply with many of the young men in attendance.

Throughout the day, a panel of adults from diverse professional backgrounds offered guidance and shared their life experiences. Their honest conversations and words of encouragement helped reinforce the summit’s core message: with the right support and determination, every young man can thrive.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. David Mauricio emphasized the significance of the event, saying, “The Summit provided the opportunity for positive male role models to impart their wisdom of life's experiences to guide our students on their journey towards success. It was an invaluable experience for all who attended.”

Dr. M. Daniels, Administrator for Inclusive Practices and Access, added, “The PCSD MBK Summit was a unifying experience that emphasized the power of mentorship and connection for our young men. With support from our Superintendent, Dr. David Mauricio, Chancellor Lester W. Young, County Executive Ken Jenkins, Regent Jan Wills, and our dedicated mentors, we brought together students from Ossining, Greenburgh, Peekskill, and beyond—empowering them to lead and thrive. As the only state with MBK written into law, New York sets the standard. Peekskill remains a caring community, committed to creating affirming spaces for all students, and I am honored to be part of this work.”

For student Jericho Davis, the summit proved to be a turning point. “I feel that Saturday's MBK Summit really opened my eyes,” Davis shared. “With the support of my mentors and brothers, I have made it to the point in my life where I feel I’m ready to take on my journey after graduation thanks to the knowledge and uplifting we share with one another.”

The event concluded with a complimentary lunch and prize giveaways—including gift cards and a 43-inch TV. More importantly, it ended with a renewed sense of purpose and empowerment among the young men who attended.

The Peekskill City School District extends heartfelt thanks to all participants, especially the mentors, panelists, and community leaders whose dedication made the event a success. The 2025 MBK Summit stands as a shining example of the district’s ongoing commitment to creating opportunities and building brighter futures for all students.
