    My email address: kwallis@peekskillschools.org

4/6/20 Hello Woodsiders!  Exciting news - there is now a special email where students or parents can send in questions if you are having difficulty in the area of math.  The email address is: MathHelp@peekskillschools.org.  Dr. Sobrin, Director of STEM for Peekskill City Schools will be the one monitoring that email and will answer you directly.  She will answer general questions or provide 1:1 tutoring as needed.  Governor Cuomo announced today that schools will be closed through April 29th, and then he will reassess the situation.  Teachers are setting up Google classrooms so it may be easier for you to navigate lessons.  We all would like to be together as soon as possible, but in the meantime, enjoy your family, try your very best to do your work or review things from the past, and make the best out of each day.  Think of a way that you can sparkle today!!  Miss you!

4/3/20 Hello!  How are you today? My days have been busy having meetings with teachers, our principal, and preparing lessons for you.  You should just about be finishing up your packets.  If you have access to a computer, I hope you are continuing to work on Zearn.  Please e-mail me if you have any questions and I will call you so we can chat.  Raz Kids is an app that can be used on a cellphone.  The city is looking for ways to find free wifii service to help families with limited data plans. I forgot to mention the other day that it was April Fool's Day....did you play any jokes or tricks on your family?

4/1/20 Good morning my friends!  I hope you have been sleeping well and getting enough rest so your brains can learn more and more each day!  Today is a new day, if you have time during your day, why not make a special card or note for someone.  Let them know how special they are in your life.  If it is for a family member, you can surprise them by putting it in a special place for them to discover, if it is to be mailed, then send your special person a beautiful picture to brighten their day along with your note.  Please check out a new video I uploaded on my web resources page about the four seasons.  There are some discussion questions at the end of the video for you and your family to discuss.  Have a beautiful day!!

3/31/20 Good morning class!  How I wish I could see you in person!  I hope you were able to get outside and enjoy the warm weather we experienced on Thursday and Friday of last week.  I went down to the Riverfront Green.  It was sad to see that the playground was taped off, but I enjoyed walking the trail and keeping my social distance.  I got to see to the buds on the trees starting to come out and the bulbs are starting to bloom.  I hope you are all working hard on your packets.  It seems like we may be doing this for awhile longer.  If you have any suggestions, please feel free to email me and I will see what I can do.  Continue to work on Raz kids and Zearn.  Explore the other websites I have put up.  Look for the joys in this day and write them down!  Be well! (Please check out the new web resource I added for Scholastic News at Home.)

3/26/20 Day 4 of Virtual Spirit Week – Fresh Air Photo

If you have a photo of your child that you would like to share with me, please upload it to an email and I will add it to my webpage and share it with Principal Rodriguez.  Go on a nature walk today and look for signs of spring – bulbs popping up, buds starting to emerge...make a list of all the signs and maybe write poem or haiku today.  A haiku works with syllables, we’ve talked about syllables during reading and Fundations.

    Traditional Haiku Structure

    • There are only three lines, totaling 17 syllables.
    • The first line is 5 syllables.
    • The second line is 7 syllables.
    • The third line is 5 syllables like the first.
    • Punctuation and capitalization are up to the poet, and need not follow the rigid rules used in structuring sentences.
    • An example:

    Laundry

    Where are my clean socks?
These smell worse than rotten fish
    Time to do laundry

Please see a new link on my resources webpage for Science 21.  Dr. Mauricio has declared Fri., March 27th and Mon. March 30th as official "snow days"...so your child has a 4 day weekend starting tomorrow!  See you back on Tuesday!  Best thing is, there will be no snow to shovel!!  Be safe!

3/25/20 Today is Day 3 of Virtual Spirit Week - It is showcase your art day.  Draw something today, color a picture beautifully, create a project, be creative!  Take a picture of it and share it with your teachers.  I hope you are continuing to spend part of day working on your virtual school packet, Raz Kids (which you can also do on a cellphone app) and Zearn if you have a laptop, ipad, or iphone.  I know everyone is trying their best.  Know that we all miss you and would much rather be with you in school, than at home.  View the shoe tying video I put on the website page if you need help.  Looking forward to seeing you soon!

3/24/20 Day 2 of Virtual Spirit Week asks, "What are you reading?"  I hope you have been on Raz Kids each day, but also that you have had someone sit down and read a book to you.  My promise to you and to myself today is that I am going to turn off the TV news and pick up one of the MANY books that I have been planning to read.  Be well, stay safe, wash your hands frequently, and learn how to tie your shoes.  I miss you!  Hope to see you soon.

3/23/20: Good morning families!  It was nice speaking with some of you on the phone today.  Please remember that the Raz Kids and Zearn are two programs that teachers can monitor from home.  We will be picking up where we left off when we return to school physically.  Typically, in school, students are on Zearn for about 30 minutes a day, however you can spend longer if you would like.  Raz Kids, there are several things you can do with one book, also teachers assign different activities to different students.  If you do not have a laptop, there is a Raz kids app that you can download on your phone.  Zearn can only be used on a laptop.  Please do not hesitate to call us if you have any questions.

3/20/20: During this time of extended home stay, I pray that you are all doing well.  I have edited some pages so that you may have additional resources in case you are looking for a variety of activities.  Our mainstay is Zearn math and Raz Kids.  If you are unable to use these programs, please consider doing something else with your child so they do not lose all the critical progress they have already made.

Looking forward to seeing you all very soon!

    Dr. Wallis
